What is Racism??

“Prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on their belief that one’s own race is superior.”

This is dictionary definition of Racism. In simple language, Racism is treating people unfairly just because of their colour of their skin. Racism is an issue that is dealt with every single day whether you realise it or not. Racism is like choosing not to eat brown coloured gems just because they are brown even though from inside they look just the same and taste just as good.

One of the headline of the 2020 was protest of Black Lives Matter in USA. USA has a old history of Racism. Racism in the United States existed since the Colonial Era and it involves laws, practices, attitudes and actions which discriminate against various group based on their race. African-Americans have faced restrictions in their political, social and economic freedom throughout much of united States history. Native Americans have suffered genocide, forced removal and massacres. Recent years research has uncovered extensive evidence of racial discrimination bin various sectors of modern U.S society including the criminal justice system, businesses, the economy, housing, health care, the media and politics.

Racism isn’t confined only to USA, but its an issue that is dealt in every part of the world.

In our country racial discriminations are deeply embedded in society, yet we never spoke about it. In India, the obsession for “white” skin tone is real. People drooling over a fair skin tone is visible in the matrimonial ads. Not only this, but the use and popularity of whitening creams have been there in India since years, yet no one took cognizance of such products that advocate colour bias. The racist mentality of Indians unleashed when we misbehaved with those from the North Eastern states. In march this year a man was arrested for spitting in the face of a Manipuri woman and Calling her ‘Corona.’ However this is not the only time when people from northeast faced harassment. Indian people calling women from Northeast by names like ‘Chinky’ and ‘Nepali’ is way too common.

Indians have also faced Racism in different parts of the world. Last month in India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar series indian players are racially abused by Australian spectators during the match.

Solution to Racism.

The solution to race inequality requires both males and females to take action. The solution to race inequality requires commitment and participation by everyone regardless of their cultural origin. This goal is achievable by working on both a local, national and international scale.
