Women athletes in India: hardships, struggle and success.

Last year on 8th of march that is on Women’s day, we witnessed the rise  of  women  in cricket. It was the T-20 world cup final between  Indian and Australian women’s  cricket  team. But   the  question  arises  here  is that do women get  equal  importance  in sports as  compared to men?  If  we  talk  about  India then surely the answer  will be NO. It is Indian mentality  which  proscribe women to make career in sports. According  to this deep rooted cause (Indian mentality), womans  are born for to become housewives. This is the main  reason  why  Indian women are far  behind in  sports.

While Indian  boys  play cricket, football, volleyball, run and cycle, whereas  Indian girls  don’t  have such  wide  range  of  choices  when it comes  to sport. It  seems  this is dictated , at least in  part by the wider  sexism  and  gender  biases that  exists  in India.  Even  many  men  say that  Wrestling , Boxing ,  Kabaddi ,  Weightlifting   are  unsuitable  games  for  women.  Disparity  between  male and female is also  a major  cause for disparagement of women  sports.   Women   who play  sports  face  many  obstacles  such  as  lower pay, less media  attention as  compare  to  their  male  counterparts. Due to  this  many  professional  athletes hold  second  jobs in  addition  to  their  sporting duties. Female  professional  players  play  in  lower  quality,  subtle  facilities  than male  professional  athlete  and  generally have lower  fan  attendance at  games.

The  solution to vanish this  Indian mentality  for  women is  SCHOOL . Yes its school where the  passion  for  sport Is  born. Instilling sportsmanship and being neutral towards men and women as well as promoting girls in sports are some of the grassroot level decisions we need to take.

But  in spite of all these reasons for not playing  sports many  women are making us proud by their  performances  globally. Some  Indian  women  seem  to be  made  of  much sterner  stuff, breaking  the gender stereotypes  to  rule  the  global  arena  when it comes  to sports  like  Boxing , Gymnastics , Wrestling , Cricket. They  have  made  us proud by winning many international titles including  in the  Olympics , Commonwealth and  Asian  games.

Many  Indian sportswomen  who  demonstrate the  grit, determination  and a lot  of  heart  which  obviated  the  obstacles  in  their  path  to success, Mary Kom  is  one of them. As  a  five-time  world amateur  Boxing  champion  and  the only  woman boxer  to  have  won  a medal  in  each  of the   six  world  championship. She  is a testimony to the fact  that  Indian-woman  are  here  to stay  in  world  athletics. When  Mary  took boxing in early 2000s , she  was  castigated  by  her father  who  told  her  that  she  shouldn’t  expect  to  get  married  given  the  abuse she  was  putting her  body  and  face  under. But  she  didn’t  quit  and continued to compete  and  now  the whole world knows her.

In India  we don’t  have any scarcity of talent but we need to put that  talent  into right place  and  giving them what  they  deserve.
